For roughly 4,000 years woodworkers have relied on the try square to test or “try” the squareness of their material, do layout work, set up equipment and check their assemblies. While the earliest examples were usually made by the carpenters themselves, the manufactured try square with a metal blade pinned to a wooden stock has been around for a couple centuries. The wide blade and thick stock make the design stable and easy to use. But wood moves and dissimilar metals wear on each other, meaning the typical try square can go out of square after a while. Blue Spruce Toolworks has taken the basic try square design and blended it with modern materials and manufacturing techniques to produce the new Blue Spruce Jeweled Try Square.
Instead of wood, the stock of the Blue Spruce Jeweled Try Square is CNC-machined from cast and ground tool plate aluminum…the most stable, stress-free aluminum made. The stainless steel blade is held to the stock with three precision-machined custom-designed binding barrels, also made from high quality stainless steel. The outside of each barrel is a perfect fit for the holes in the blade and the stock, creating a square that is square and will stay that way for several lifetimes of use.
For hundreds of years silversmiths, car enthusiasts, watch makers and other metal workers have painstakingly applied overlapping swirl marks in a geometric pattern to their finest work. Blue Spruce’s design team wanted a distinctive look for their new square and chose this engine-turned…or “jeweled”… pattern for the blade. It’s a look reminiscent of fine watches, classic sports cars and custom-built hot rods.
You can create the exact look you want for your Jeweled Try Square. The square is available in two sizes, 6-inch and 12-inch. The stock is available in black, blue and clear anodized finishes along with Blue Spruce Green Cerakote. Like most Blue Spruce layout tools, you have your choice of Cocobolo, African Blackwood, or Figured Maple for the infill. But we’ve added a fourth infill choice for the Jeweled Try Square. You can also get it with the warm, supple feel of genuine leather.
Please note that due to current CITES regulations we are unable to ship African Blackwood, Cocobolo and other Rosewoods or dalbergia outside of the USA. Please do not order these options if your final shipping destination is not in the USA. Thank you for your understanding.
