Every book on sharpening chisels starts with pages of instructions on how to flatten the back. The authors devote so much attention to the subject because chisels don’t arrive ready to use or even with a reasonably flat back…until now. Blue Spruce Toolworks new Optima™ Chisels feature a lapped and polished back with flatness measured in light bands (the same system used to measure silicon wafers). This incredible surface results in edge sharpness unlike any other chisel in the world. You will never have to flatten the backs of your Blue Spruce Optima chisels, ever. And, when you unbox your new Optima Chisels, they’re razor sharp and 100% ready to go to work. No sharpening, no honing, no nothing.
Perfectly sharpened is a great first step, but how does it hold its edge? Each Optima Chisel is machined from A2 tool steel, then double-tempered and cryogenically treated. The tempering and cryo treatments result in an incredibly fine grain structure and a hardness of Rockwell C-60 to C-62. These chisels take and hold an edge like no other.
Blue Spruce Toolworks dovetail skew chisels are specifically designed for fine paring and fitting of joinery such as dovetail joints, secret miters, angled joints, etc. The sides are machined with a concave profile and ends in a thin land. This allows maximum visibility and prevents bruising of angled joints. They are available in both 1/4 and 3/8 widths and usually ordered in left and right hand pairs. You will not find a finer, precision chisel.
