Hand-Forged Fine Drawknives

Typical drawknives are heavy, brute-force tools used in the rough stages of green woodworking. They’re designed to hog off large chunks of stock with little concern for finesse or surface finish. Here at Blue Spruce Toolworks we worked with our blacksmithing friends to design a drawknife that embraces the two-handed control of traditional drawknives but with a blade scaled down to a size suited for finer, more detailed shaping. Then, we hand-forged the blade from 1095 steel, ground a 23.5° bevel on it and honed it to a razor edge. Think of it as a favorite whittling knife, but with two-handed control instead of one.

When forming convex shapes, work with the flat side of the blade down. For inside curves, flip the blade over so the bevel is against the stock and steer the cut gracefully through the curve.

The handles are shaped to be equally comfortable on either pull strokes or push strokes. And, they’re as beautiful as they are comfortable, available in your choice of Infused Figured Maple, Cocobolo or African Blackwood.

Each blade is forged by skilled blacksmiths in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country. The knifemaker carefully flattens the blades in the forging process. Then, after heat-treating and tempering, grinds the bevel to produce a smooth, straight edge. Each handle is skillfully shaped in symmetry with its partner on the other end of the blade.
