Blue Spruce Toolworks introduces the first and only Western tooth-line saw designed from the ground up to cut on the pull stroke. For centuries, Western hand saws have cut on the push stroke and Japanese saws have cut on the pull stroke. Japanese saws gained popularity in the 1980s with the simple demonstration of a playing card…hold the end of a card and push forward, the card bends. Hold the end and pull the card toward you and it stays perfectly straight. But Japanese saws come in two flavors, disposable and crazy expensive. Crazy expensive wouldn't be so bad if you could find anyone within 5,000 miles that knew how to sharpen it. We set about blending Western tooth geometry with pull-stroke theory.

It starts with a blade that is just .012" thick…about 3 sheets of paper. The shape and set of the teeth work with the tension of the pull stroke to deliver very straight cuts. The hybrid tooth design at 14 teeth per inch is perfectly suited to both rip and cross cuts in delicate joinery work. New-comers to hand-tool joinery will find success with these saws faster than learning with a conventional push saw. Even experienced hand-tool joiners will find species of wood and types of joints where our pull saws outshine many others. Best of all, anyone comfortable with sharpening a typical Western saw can sharpen it… meaning you can enjoy this saw for the rest of your woodworking career.

You have your choice of infused figured Maple or Bolivian Rosewood for the handle. Both are available for delivery anywhere in the world.

If you've struggled with traditional Western sawsparticularly in getting a cut started…this is the saw you've been waiting for. The Western Pull Saw from Blue Spruce Toolworks.

The Blue Spruce Backsaw Holster

Fine-joinery backsaw blades are usually quite thin, and they can be prone to gaining 'memory' for stresses that have been placed on the blade when being stored. But with our specially designed holster, never have to worry about storing your cherished Blue Spruce Backsaw. The steel, carbide black powder coated holster cradles the spine of the saw, allowing the blade to rest without any stress whatsoever. We put our holster to the test, inserting and removing a single backsaw over 3,500 times. There was no hint of the coating failing, and not a scratch on the saw's spine or blade. While the holster is designed around our line of backsaws, we also tested it with a variety of backsaws, from 150+ years ago to various modern makers and in all shapes and sizes—they all fit. However, we can only guarantee fit with Blue Spruce Toolworks backsaws. The holster can be mounted in a horizontal or vertical position to suit your needs. It can be placed on a wall, under a shelf, diagonally on a workbench leg, or even underneath your workbench top. Click here to order the Blue Spruce Backsaw Holster.
