Native to Central and West Africa, Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) is one of the most prized exotics for woodworkers and turners. The heartwood is black with very little variation. It has a very fine and even texture and turns and polishes to a high gloss. These blanks have been sealed in wax to prevent cracks.

We’ve recently secured a quantity of Lake Volta Ebony blanks that come from the submerged forest within Ghana’s Lake Volta. These trees have been underwater since 1961, but they remain standing, perfectly preserved, providing a sustainable alternative to harvesting Ghana’s living forests. Whereas Ebony is typically a jet black with little variation in grain, Lake Volta Ebony has more of a brown appearance that contains beautiful reddish hues with stunning sapwood streaking. This spectacular appearance is the result of the wood absorbing the lake’s minerals over time. 2” x 2” x 12” blanks of Lake Volta Ebony are available only while supplies last.

Blanks are considered rough lumber and may contain surface checks and tear-out. These are not defects. All sizes are nominal, +/- 1/8”.

Wood is a natural product—color, figure, and grain pattern can vary wildy—no two pieces will be the same.

All of our doweled stock is done in-house.  It is prepped for our lathe operation and may not be perfectly round.  It may have some flats and be rough from the doweling process.  This is not considered a defect.
