Some woodworkers prefer a traditional Joiner's mallet style with angled square faces over the round carver's mallet style. Blue Spruce Toolworks offers two of the finest mallets available today. The head of this mallet is made from curly maple that has been infused with a hard resin which adds weight and makes the wood incredibly tough and durable. It hits solid and is not bouncy. One face is the bare, infused wood while the other side is faced with thick leather. The leather side is great for assembling joinery or hitting chisels where you want a slightly softer but highly controlled contact. The handle is nicely shaped and the wide chamfers give a comfortable grip with maximum orientation feedback. It is available in Beech, Hickory or other custom woods.
24 Oz Mallet:
Sometimes a heavier, more authoritative mallet is needed. The 24 oz Joiner's mallets is perfect for driving mortise chisels or other heavy chopping needs. The handle is designed for two gripping positions for both hard and softer hitting situations. It includes a leather lanyard. This mallet will quickly become your go-to mallet for heavy duty tasks and will last a lifetime of hard use. The handle is 9-1/2 inches long (240mm) and the head is 5 inches long, 2-5/8 inches high and just under 2-1/4 inches wide. (130mm x 67mm x 56mm)
16 Oz Mallet:
This 16 oz Joiner's mallet is perfect for dovetailing and driving smaller mortise chisels or other chopping needs. This mallet will quickly become a favorite and will last a lifetime of hard use. The handle is 8 inches long and the head is 4 inches long, 2-1/4 inches high and 2 inches wide.
The standard woods we stock for handles include Beech and Hickory and often cherry. We can make handles from other custom woods as special orders. Please email us before placing a custom order to arrange who will supply the wood as sometimes it is very difficult to find specialty woods in the proper size. Our long handle requires a blank that is a minimum of 1-1/8 x 1-5/8 x 12-1/2 inches While the short requires a minimum of 11 inches.
The mallet heads are infused with a polymer resin to make a very dense, hard and durable mallet. We offer both a "plain" version and a "fancy" version. The only difference is the amount of figure in the wood. The plain heads will have no figure to possibly lighter figure. The fancy heads have a more pronounced figure. There are occasions when we get wood that is loaded with figure. These are used for the fancy heads or are put in our "Top Shelf" product page. This is the exception and not standard.
Note that we make your mallets to order and try very hard to keep lead times to a week or two at the most. On very rare occasion the lead times can be up to 6 weeks and custom orders can be up to 12 weeks.
Please note that due to current CITES regulations we are unable to ship African Blackwood, Cocobolo and other Rosewoods or dalbergia outside of the USA. Please do not order these options if your final shipping destination is not in the USA. Thank you for your understanding.
